Colorado Superintendent Pay And Reality Don't Mix

Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't make it right, does it?

From Channel 8 Grand Junction:

"Over the last three years, the six largest school districts in the area have cut a collective total of over $30 million with much, much more on the chopping block. During a time of layoffs, furloughs, and the elimination of dozens of school programs, though, superintendent salaries have done the opposite for the most part.

Haptonstall’s school district in Parachute has lost 21% of its students during that time. Meanwhile, his salary stayed frozen at $127,720 per year. Instead of cutting his pay, the school board went forward with 27 vacant staff positions last year. And, that’s only the beginning.

“We’re looking at cutting everything from curriculum to assessment money, to teacher instructional budgets, and even furloughs,” Haptonstall added.

Just 15 miles away in Rifle, Susan Birdsey is in her first year as superintendent of the Garfield Re-2 School District. Even though her district cut $3.3 million last year, she still got a $3,962 raise over her predecessor and is now making $133,962 per year."

Remember Haptonstall? He's the dude who just got a $50,000 bonus in January after the district had to make $1.5 million in cuts.

The sickness is systemic. When that is the case, it means the system must be eliminated and a new one implemented.
